Don’t Let the Bed Bugs Bite

We’re in the midst of a bed bug epidemic and it seems to be a global problem. The bedbug, Cimex lectularius, bites in a row. At first there are minimal reactions but with increasing bites and exposure, the bites may look more inflamed and allergic. Bedbug bites may look like hives, occasionally blisters and even cause anaphylaxis on occasion. In our experience, sometimes only one bed partner is affected. That may be simply a function of which side of the bed harbors the insects or they may be attracted to one person more than the other. Bed bugs are drawn to warmth and carbon dioxide and tend to feed in the middle of the night. Bed bug sniffing dogs may be quite effective but be wary of bed bug detection and treatment scams.  The NYC Health Department has more information.
